Created during the British Raj under Governor Sir Malcolm Hailey, it was named Hailey National Park, becoming the first national park established in mainland Asia to preserve dwindling wildlife habitats.
Briefly renamed Ramganga National Park in 1954, it was formally dedicated in 1956 to Edward James "Jim" Corbett — legendary hunter, author, and naturalist who played a crucial role in founding the sanctuary.
Corbett was proudly selected as the official launch site for India's landmark wildlife initiative, Project Tiger, inaugurated on 1st April 1973 to save the Royal Bengal Tiger from extinction.
